International Primary Curriculum (IPC) at Burnt Oak Junior School

At Burnt Oak Junior School, we follow the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), which is one of the fastest-growing primary curriculums worldwide. The IPC is a comprehensive programme with clearly defined learning goals for every subject, personal development, and international understanding. It is used by over 1,500 schools in 85 countries, both internationally and within the UK.

The IPC was designed to support teachers and achieve four key aims:

  • To help children learn the knowledge, skills, and understanding they need to become aware of the world around them

  • To support children in developing personal skills that enable them to take an active role in their communities and lives

  • To encourage children to develop an international mindset alongside an understanding of their own nationality

  • To deliver all of the above based on the latest research into how children learn best, inspiring them to be lifelong learners

How the IPC works

The IPC is built around clearly defined learning goals that outline the subject knowledge, skills, and understandings children should achieve at different stages of their primary education. This includes academic, personal, and international goals.

Each topic or “unit of work” includes practical activities and detailed teacher resources designed to make learning as engaging and meaningful as possible. Every unit starts with an Entry Point—an exciting introduction to spark curiosity and interest—and ends with an Exit Point. The Exit Point ties together the learning and often involves a purposeful action or project that empowers children and gives them a sense of achievement and participation.

At Burnt Oak, we believe that learning should be enjoyable and meaningful. The IPC helps us create inspiring and motivating learning experiences that prepare pupils for life in an interconnected and rapidly changing world.
