Physical Education at Burnt Oak Junior School

At Burnt Oak Junior School, our primary goal is to foster a love for physical activity and promote overall well-being. We aim to help pupils understand the importance of leading an active and healthy lifestyle. In line with the National Curriculum for Physical Education (PE), we are committed to supporting children’s physical development and helping them recognise the lifelong benefits of regular exercise for their physical and mental health.

Our intent is to inspire pupils to find joy in movement, develop coordination, and build strong teamwork skills. We provide opportunities for children to engage in a wide range of physical activities, build essential motor skills, and understand how to maintain their health and fitness. Our PE curriculum equips pupils with the knowledge, confidence, and motivation to make positive choices about their well-being—establishing the foundations for a healthy and active future.

“A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.”
National Curriculum, 2014

PE at Burnt Oak

We are fortunate to have specialist PE teachers at Burnt Oak, ensuring high-quality instruction for all pupils. Our PE lessons follow a progressive structure that develops fundamental motor skills, balance, coordination, and overall control of movement. We aim for all pupils—regardless of ability, age, size, or aspiration—to move with confidence and develop a genuine desire to participate in sport and physical activity.

We deliver our PE curriculum using the PE Pro Scheme of Work, which provides a clear and consistent progression of skills across year groups. This high-quality scheme supports planning, delivery, and assessment, helping ensure every child can develop physically, socially, and emotionally through engaging and inclusive lessons.

PE offers valuable learning experiences through movement, contributing to children’s wider development and supporting them in leading full, active, and healthy lives. Our curriculum offers a broad and balanced range of activities, including athletics, multi-skills, dance, swimming, and more. Pupils benefit from the variety, challenge, and personal improvement that these experiences bring.

All pupils at Burnt Oak will leave school having accessed high-quality PE, equipped with the skills and confidence to continue being active and healthy throughout their lives.

Key Learning Objectives in PE

Our key objectives are to:

  • Provide pupils with a wide range of enjoyable experiences in physical education and sport

  • Develop enthusiasm, positive attitudes, and practical skills to support participation, competition, and leadership in a healthy, active lifestyle

Our lessons follow a personal learning journey based on a fudamental skills and multi-ability approach, equipping pupils with the core abilities to reach their potential and enjoy long-term participation in sport. The three core fundamental movement skills we focus on are:

  • Agility

  • Balance

  • Coordination

Swimming at Burnt Oak

Swimming is taught in Year 3 and Year 5, with each class attending intensive lessons during the Autumn or Summer terms. Our swimming curriculum focuses on ensuring pupils can:

  • Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres

  • Use a range of strokes effectively (e.g. front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke)

  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

Sports Premium

We make effective use of the PE and Sports Premium to enhance physical education and offer a broad range of after-school sports clubs across both Key Stages. These are led by a mix of external providers and Burnt Oak staff.
