Music at Burnt Oak Junior School

At Burnt Oak Junior School, music is a regular and valued part of the curriculum. Lessons are taught in a variety of ways, using both instruments and our voices to explore the richness of musical expression. Music supports the development of transferable skills—such as purposeful listening—which are beneficial across many areas of learning.

“Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.”
National Curriculum, 2014

Singing Assembly

Pupils take part in a weekly singing assembly. These sessions not only support musical development—such as singing in rounds or using rhythm effectively—but also contribute positively to pupils’ wellbeing and emotional health. Songs are chosen to teach specific vocal techniques or to uplift and inspire.

Music Curriculum

Music is sometimes integrated into our IPC (International Primary Curriculum) topics, allowing children to explore music in a cross-curricular context. We also used a devised scheme, which enables us to cover key aspects of the National Curriculum through singing and percussion work. In some year groups, the focus shifts towards instrumental learning.

Throughout all music lessons, children develop core skills in listening, performing, and composing. They also explore various musical styles and learn about the historical and cultural context of different genres to enhance their understanding and interpretation.

Burnt Oak Choir

Pupils are encouraged to join our school choirs, which provide further opportunities to develop vocal technique and musical discipline. Choir members learn to sing in harmony, follow a conductor, and perform confidently in a group. Regular performances help build their self-esteem and foster a love of singing. This year, our choirs have sung at the Fairfield Halls and at the O2 as part of the Young Voices Choir.

1:1 Music Lessons

We are fortunate to work in partnership with specialist teachers who provide individual instrumental lessons in guitar, piano and singing. . These lessons support the development of personal musicianship and allow pupils to pursue music at a more advanced level.
